Avon-By-The-Sea History

For more than a century, this swimming pool has been a centerpiece of summer life along the Jersey Shore.

Plans for a saltwater pool here date back to the early 1900s, and by 1909 it was already hosting competitive swim races that drew crowds year after year. Over time, the pool evolved alongside the community, surviving repairs, upgrades, and even long closures during public health scares.

In 1961, the pool reopened after major renovations, this time as a freshwater pool. With it came one of its most enduring traditions. That year, the Dalton Cup was introduced, honoring William A. Dalton Sr. and Marie Dalton, longtime supporters of local athletics. Today, the event remains the highlight of the annual firefighter swim meets, challenging high school swimmers to four fast laps of freestyle.

Generations competed, families gathered, and trophies found their way into homes across town.

Another tradition took root in 1975 with the start of water ballet. For 50 years, it has brought a different kind of performance to the pool, blending athleticism, creativity, and community spirit. In 2025, that tradition celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Today, these traditions continue to define this place, not just as a pool, but as a living part of the community shaped by competition, celebration, and summers well spent.
