Avon-By-The-Sea History

The first aid squad was organized in 1931, when a group of local firemen came together to serve their community in times of emergency.

Within a year, the squad had joined the New Jersey First Aid Council, been officially recognized by local government, and put its first ambulance into service, a secondhand hearse that was repurposed for rescue work.

In 1934, the squad purchased the first resuscitator ever used in New Jersey. That same year, members helped survivors from the Morro Castle disaster off the Jersey coast. In 1937, they also transported survivors from the Hindenburg disaster to the hospital.

As the years went on, the squad grew with the community, opening its own building on Main Street in 1959 and continuing a long tradition of service, fundraising, and care.

Today, that legacy lives on through the volunteers and supporters who have kept this organization going for generations.
